When we are unhappy or stressed, we look for solutions to feel better.  Often the go-to choices are comfort foods, binge-watching our favorite TV shows, alcohol, or similar treats.  But while these options may provide temporary relief, that relief will run out with the last bite of macaroni and cheese.  If you want your happiness to last longer, exercise is a better choice.  Today, we are discussing the link between exercise and happiness in the short and long-term.

Exercise has the function of making you stronger, leaner, and more fit.   But there’s more!  It also has a positive impact on the chemicals in your body, increasing your levels of endorphins and antibodies and lowering the level of cortisol.  This shift of levels creates a link between exercise and happiness.

First, endorphins are neurotransmitters that are often referred to as “happy chemicals.”  They function by blocking messages of pain or stress and instead providing a feeling of euphoria.  Endorphins are released by exercise.  According to studies from the University of Vermont, a workout of 20 minutes can yield up to 12 hours of mood benefits.  Plus, endorphins have addictive properties, making you want to continue to exercise and release more endorphins.  This is a positive cycle of health and happiness.

Next, exercise and happiness have been shown to increase the production of antibodies.  Antibodies support the immune system by fighting antigens such as bacteria and viruses.  By strengthening your immune system, you become more resistant to diseases.  Being healthier allows you to continue to exercise and continue practicing self-care, which in turn allows you to maintain the happiness that comes with those habits.

Lastly, exercise has the effect of lowering the level of cortisol in the body.  Cortisol is a hormone that gets released when you experience stress.  It comes with all of the caveats that typically come with stress.  This could include difficulty sleeping, weight gain, and weakening of the immune system.

In addition to the more immediate mood enhancement benefits of exercise, studies also show that exercise may have benefits for individuals who suffer from Major Depressive Disorder or anxiety.  Whether used in combination with antidepressants or as a first means of treating depression, there is evidence that exercising a few times a week can have a positive impact long-term on symptoms of depression.

Exercise and happiness are clearly linked, and it is worth considering if you are looking for ways to improve your overall health and self-care.
