Falls have a critical influence on a person’s health status and mental outlook. In our elder population over 95% of hip fractures are caused as a result of falls. The risk of falling increases as we age. Some of the main RISK factors are poor balance, loss of mobility and muscle weakness. If an individual is bothered by the fear of falling he or she is likely to avoid walking and being physically active. This causes the muscles to weaken and muscle strength is extremely important in maintaining balance!
We can assess and address gait problems and strength issues that can lead to falling with exercise and simple movement patterns.
A few of the immediate benefits of physical activity are:
- · Helps regulate blood glucose levels
- · Adrenalin and Noradrenalin levels are stimulated
- · Improved sleep (physical activity helps enhance the quality and quantity of sleep in people of all ages)
- Balance, flexibility and muscle strength are three main factors in the ability to improve and maintain functional fitness.
FALL PREVENTION TIPS:
- · Exercise to keep muscles healthy and strong (Improving strength and balance).
- · Medications (Be aware of medicines that cause drowsiness or dizziness).
- Tripping hazards (Remove clutter, hazards and poor lighting).
