am i in menopause

One of the questions I get most often from middle-aged women is, “how will I know if I am in menopause?”  I have also noticed that women over 40 are quick to attribute various ailments to menopause.  For example, “I don’t feel well today, maybe it’s menopause.”  So, to answer these questions, I’ve put together a list of symptoms that occur when menopause is on it’s way.  The official definition of menopause is when there has been the absence of the menstrual period for 12 or more consecutive months.

Many women want a blood test to check their hormones.  Unfortunately, hormones fluctuate throughout the month in a non-menopausal woman and there is a large range that is considered “normal” hormone levels.  Because of this, hormone blood tests are not very helpful in determining if menopause is on the way.

Irregular periods- In most women, the “regular” monthly period becomes irregular in frequency and length.  For some women, they can go months without having a traditional period, only to have 2 in one month the next month.  Some women may notice more subtle changes; perhaps their period used to last 7 days, and now it is 4, or their cycle used to be 26-28 days, and now it is 30-32 days long.

Sleep irregularities- Many women begin to notice differences in their sleep patterns.  This may mean trouble falling asleep, waking during the night, or early morning rising.  This may also be associated with hot flashes (particularly waking during the night).

Hot flashes- Near the beginning of menopausal changes, some women may notice an occasional hot flash.  It may be that it just seems a little more hot in a room than it normally would. Dressing in layers may be necessary when this starts to happen.  Unfortunately, for women who have this symptom, it may become more intense before it begins to subside.

Mood disturbance- Many women also notice changes in their mood.  Perhaps there is an increase in mood swings, or more days that have feelings of sadness, irritability, and/or anxiety.

Sex Drive changes- Many women notice they have a decreased interest in sex.  This can be related to the vaginal dryness associated with menopausal changes as well as just a decreased desire for sex.
