On Sunday morning I got up early and set out on a run to downtown Napa and back to my hotel. I figured that it would be about 5-miles. The weather was cold but clear as I ran south towards downtown. To be safe, I brought my trusty iPhone set to tell me how far I was going. After reaching downtown Napa I made a left turn and started heading back. About 15 or so minutes of running I began doubting that I was on the right course; you know that feeling that “we aren’t in Kansas anymore”, the street names started sounding funky. Then I noticed that the sun was in the wrong place, to my left! I ran on contemplating this conundrum, my mind was a pretzel of how the sun was on the wrong side. Being a guy I continued to run when my internal “mom voice” said “stop and get directions!” If you’ve used the iPhone directions app you know that you can type in where you want to go and it helps route you back (most of the time). You are represented by a blue dot, your destination is a red dot. Without my glasses I could make out the blue dot and that I was running away from my hotel! I guess that I should have trusted the sun’s position in the sky rather than my iPhone. I finally got my blue dot to get closer to my hotel dot and felt less panicked that I was going to end up crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. I figured I probably ran 7 miles tops and that my foray into the nether worlds cost me a mile or two. After an interminable amount of time (the space time continuum gets funky when you run-look it up) I saw the roof of my hotel and praised the running gods (Kenyan, I think). After navigating the the screens on my iPhone I learned that I actually ran 9.2 miles! Next time I will trust the sun over my iPhone.
